Situated on the 75th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, Whitney Museum of American Art is one of the most visited traditional places. The purpose of the establishment of this museum was to help the artists of America.

History

Whitney Museum of American Art was built in 1931 on the suggestion of Vanderbilt Whitney who worked as professional sculpture in the US. It had over 700 objects when opened for the first time. Initially, she tried to offer her objects to Metropolitan Museum in New York but they refused to accept her collection. These 700 objects were exhibited for the first 20 years of the museum.

The current building is the third building for the museum. Current Whitney Museum of American Art Building was established in 1966. Marcel Breuer, who is the student at the Bauhaus school, is the architect of the building. The building occupies 30,000 square foot and has height of 97 feet. The structure of the building is based on the pyramid.

The Collection

There are around 18000 art pieces in the museum and most of the exhibitions feature the American culture. Over 2000 American artists paint these artworks. Alexander Calder is one of the major contributors of this collection.
The museum has different sections for different artists. Artworks by famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Willem de Kooning and Keith Haring’s are quite popular among the art lovers.
There is a wide range of exhibitions offered at the museum which include the temporary exhibitions. Creative paintings by the artists are displayed at the temporary exhibitions.

The Atria (pedestrian gallery) has an area of 900 square feet. Four exhibitions are held each year at The Atria.
